Microbiome modulates impact of the diet in humans and mice. This study investigates relationships between gut microbiome whole genome metagenomes of dogs, humans, mice and pigs. Based on catalog of over 1.2 million genes of dog gut microbiome and taxonomic abundance profiling, it was shown that dog microbiome is closer to that of humans than to either pigs or mice. Randomized intervention with high protein/low carb diet versus lower protein/high carb diet confirmed that diet has a large and reproducible effect on dog microbiome independent of sex and breed. Overweight and obese dogs had larger microbiome shifts than lean dogs in response to high protein diet.
